How Lumpsum Returns are Calculated
A lumpsum investment is a one-time, single investment made in a mutual fund or financial instrument. The returns are calculated using the power of compounding, where the investment grows exponentially over time as you earn returns on your principal as well as on the accumulated returns.
Lumpsum Calculation Formula
A = P × (1 + r)^t
- A = Maturity Amount (Future Value)
- P = Principal (One-time Investment)
- r = Annual Interest Rate (decimal)
- t = Time Period in Years
Example Calculation
For a lumpsum investment of ₹1,00,000 at 12% p.a. for 10 years:
• P = ₹1,00,000
• r = 12% = 0.12
• t = 10 years
• A = 1,00,000 × (1 + 0.12)^10
→ Wealth Gained: ₹2,10,585
→ Total Value: ₹3,10,585
Lumpsum vs SIP: Which is Better?
Lumpsum
Investing a large sum at once. Best when markets are low or you have a windfall (bonus, inheritance). Higher risk of timing the market.
SIP
Investing a fixed amount regularly. Averages out market volatility (Rupee Cost Averaging). Ideal for salaried individuals and long-term goals.
When to Choose Lumpsum Investing?
- 1 Windfall Gains: If you receive a sudden large sum of money like a yearly bonus, inheritance, or property sale proceeds.
- 2 Favorable Market Conditions: When stock markets are down or valuations are attractive, a lumpsum investment can yield higher returns as the market recovers.
- 3 Debt Funds: For short-to-medium term debt investments, lumpsum is preferred as returns are more stable and less volatile than equity.
