How NPS Corpus is Calculated

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-sponsored retirement savings scheme. You contribute regularly during your working years, and the money is invested in market-linked instruments (Equity, Corporate Bonds, Government Securities). At retirement (age 60), the accumulated corpus is used to withdraw a lump sum (max 60%) and buy an annuity (min 40%) for a regular monthly pension.

NPS Calculation Formula

Corpus = P × [((1 + i)^n - 1) / i] × (1 + i)

Pension = Annuity Value × (Annuity Rate / 12 / 100)

  • P = Monthly Contribution
  • i = Monthly Interest Rate (Annual Return / 12 / 100)
  • n = Total Months till Age 60

Example Calculation

For a 25-year-old investing ₹5,000/month at 10% p.a., with 40% Annuity at 6% annuity rate:

• Total Invested: ₹21,00,000 (₹5,000 × 420 months)

• Investment Period: 35 Years (60 - 25)

→ Total Corpus: ₹1.89 Crore (approx.)

→ Lump Sum (60%): ₹1.13 Crore

→ Monthly Pension: ₹37,718
